Vietnam - Kazakhstan relations


1. Political relations

After Kazakhstan declared independence, Vietnam recognized Kazakhstan and the two countries established diplomatic relations on 26th September 1992. On February 1994, Foreign Minister Nguyen Manh Cam visited Kazakhstan. Prime Minister Vo Van Kiet also paid an official visit to Kazakhstan on June 1994.

The political ties between Vietnam and Kazakhstan are good. There is no problem between the two countries.

On June 2005 and May 2007, a delegation led by Assistant Foreign Minister Dao Viet Trung visited Kazakhstan and had political consultations with the Ministry of Foreign Affairs of Kazakhstan.

Vietnam and Kazakhstan have signed the following bilateral agreements:

- Agreement on economic and trade cooperation (1st February 1994)
- Protocol on cooperation between the two Ministries of Foreign Affairs (1st February 1994).

2. Economic and trade relations

Trade exchanges between the two countries reached 27 million USD in 2002, 33.7 million in 2003, and 45 million in 2004. In 2005, the two-way trade turnover was at 46.14 million USD, of which Vietnam exports to and imports from Kazakhstan was 1.44 million USD and 44.7 million USD respectively. In the first 9 months of 2006, the two-way trade turnover reached 14.2 million USD.

The Vietnam-Kazakhstan’s joint-committee on economic-trade and scientific-technological cooperation has been established and met for 2 sessions (the first session was on October 1997 in Almaty and the second was on April 1998 in Hanoi). The next session of this Committee is scheduled to be held in the capital of Astana in September 2007.

Currently, the Ambassador of Vietnam  to the Russian Federation is also in charge of Kazakhstan and Kazakhstan’s Ambassador to China is in charge of  Vietnam.

On 18th April 2007, the Prime Minister decided to establish Vietnam’s embassy in Kazakhstan. The preparatory work is currently being undertaken. (As of 12 June 2007)
