Vietnam – Yemen relations
Vietnam established diplomatic relations with North Yemen on 16th October 1963 and with South Yemen on 27th July 1968. After Yemen’s unification (1990), Vietnam considered 16th October 1963 the official date of the establishment of diplomatic relations between the two countries. From April 1971 to April 1995, Vietnam established a residential mission in Yemen.
In May 1990, Yemen set up its embassy in Hanoi but due to economic difficulties, Yemen closed the embassy in 1993.
Now, Vietnam’s ambassador to Iraq doubles as ambassador to Yemen and Yemen’s ambassador to China doubles as ambassador to Vietnam.
Vietnam-Yemen relations are undergoing developments. The two countries have signed Agreement on Cooperation in Culture, Economics, Trade, Science and Technology (July 1994), Agreement of Cooperation between the two Communist Parties (January 1979), Agreement on Exchange of medical experts (1991), Trade Agreement, Agreement on the Establishment of Joint Committee (1993), and Agreement on Medical Cooperation (1996).
The bilateral trade reached over 7 million USD in 2006 (of which Vietnam exported 6.6 million USD).
