Malaysia, Viet Nam join anti-human trafficking efforts
Kuala Lumpur (VNA) - The Malaysian and Vietnamese police will work closely together to find out whether there are local criminal gangs working with human trafficking rings in Viet Nam to smuggle Vietnamese women into Malaysia as prostitutes, local media reported on February 2.
According to Malaysian Deputy Inspector-General of Police Ismail Omar, scores of young women from the Mekong Delta region in Viet Nam were promised well-paid work as waitresses in Malaysia.
The trafficking ring would organise their passports and flight tickets, and then force them into prostitution. If they refused, they were locked up, beaten and starved, according to the report.
Ismail said Malaysian police were waiting for the full facts on whether or not local gangs were working with human trafficking rings in Viet Nam .
